SHEFFIELD FUNK COLLECTIVE

i have been asked of the good people at sheffield funk collective to dj at the pre party for the next event at the o2 in sheffield on 4 june.

i caught up with the event organiser and all round nice guy darren moon aka (dj sensus) to ask him a few questions.

hi darren, how long have you been dj'ing ?

I started to DJ in 1977 at the age of 10 for family, friends and youth clubs. At 16 I landed residency in Rotherham's largest nightclub Tiffany's pulling in crowds of 1500 every Friday & Saturday. after 4 years and a win in the South Yorkshire mixing competition, I moved to residency at Zhivagos Nottingham, where I played in the Urban side of the club. Due to the travelling I left and started residency at Isabella's Sheffield. Over the next 4 years or so I built up the crowds to bursting point, having to remove all furniture to get them all in. I played Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights for the following 4 years. After Isabella's I had a break from the scene, but couldn't stay away forever so I started a night called Dfunkd, and a handful of guest spots around South Yorkshire. Recently I have been doing a fair amount of production work, remixing and editing tracks plus releasing my own compositions. DJ Sensus

where did the name dj sensus come from ?

It really was just one of those moments when you hear or read something and you think that sounds cool, I wonder what it means. Sensus is Latin for feeling, sense, understanding, soul, so it fit perfectly for me.

what was the idea behind sfc?

Simple really, I lost my Father to Cancer 6 years ago, then 4 years ago I lost my Fiancé to skin cancer and the year before last Christmas Eve my father in law to be passed away. The initial idea was to hire a bar in Sheffield, a couple of DJ's and raise a few hundred pound for the charity. But after I created the website www.sheffieldfunkcollective.co.uk more and more DJ's and bands wanted to be apart of the night. So it grew and grew until currently the site has had over 43000 hits and we now have a Pre Party event with 2 DJ's and a live band and the main event at the O2 Academy with 10 more DJ's and another live band. Alongside that we have original commission paintings by local artists done for us to auction off after the event on the 4th June.

if anybody wants tickets to this event either email me or you can buy online through the sfc website http://www.sheffieldfunkcollective.co.uk/
